The biggest SEO trend going into 2027 is that search is no longer only a list of links. According to recent reporting, Google’s AI Mode now has more than a billion monthly users, and AI Overviews appear on roughly 40% of US searches. Rankings still matter. But being cited in an AI answer, and being the brand people search for by name, now matters just as much.
We work on SEO for clients across Bangladesh, the UK and more than 20 other countries, and 2026 rewrote much of the playbook. Below are the nine shifts we expect to define 2027, what is driving each one, and what to do about it before your competitors do.

1. Will AI Mode replace traditional Google search in 2027?
AI Mode will not fully replace the classic results page in 2027, but it is quickly becoming many people’s default way to search. Google has made it much easier to reach, and reporting by TIME says it now has more than a billion monthly users, who type queries roughly three times longer than traditional searches.
In September 2026 Google pushed users further into AI Mode: AI Overviews now lead into it, the homepage has new AI buttons, and the feature set keeps growing. The September 2026 Google webmaster report also confirms Gemini models power parts of the experience.
What to do: structure every important page so a machine can lift a complete answer from it.
- Open each section with a direct 40–60 word answer to the heading’s question.
- Phrase headings the way people actually ask questions, not as keyword fragments.
- Use tables, numbered steps and short paragraphs that are easy to extract and cite.
- Cover the follow-up questions a conversational searcher would ask next.
2. Is organic traffic declining because of AI Overviews?
Yes — for many simple informational queries, clicks are falling. TIME cites Ahrefs research associating AI Overviews with a 58% lower click-through rate, and reports that visits to the top 100 news sites fell from about 70 million in 2024 to 47.6 million in July 2026.
That does not mean SEO stops working. It means the easy, low-intent clicks — definitions, quick facts, simple how-tos — are disappearing first. Visitors who still click tend to be further along: comparing options, checking prices or ready to contact someone.
What to do: stop judging SEO purely on sessions. Track enquiries, sales, sign-ups and assisted conversions from organic search, and shift effort towards commercial and decision-stage content — comparisons, pricing pages, case studies and service pages.
3. What did Google’s 2026 core updates reward?
The 2026 core updates rewarded original “destination” sources over middlemen. Search Engine Land’s analysis of the March 2026 core update found official sites, established brands and niche specialists gained, while aggregators, directories and comparison-led sites lost ground.
The volatility was severe: in that dataset, around 90% of top-10 results moved, and roughly a quarter of pages that had ranked in the top 10 dropped out of the top 100 entirely. Repackaging other people’s information has become a fragile strategy.
What to do: give Google a reason to treat you as the source.
- Publish data, examples and observations only your business has.
- Show who wrote the content and why they are qualified to write it.
- Go deeper on fewer topics instead of thinly covering everything.
4. Does brand matter more than backlinks for SEO in 2027?
Backlinks still matter, but brand signals are catching up in importance. When AI systems decide which businesses to mention, they lean on how often and how positively a brand is discussed across the web — in reviews, news, forums, social platforms and industry sites — not just on who links to whom.
This is our reading of where search is heading rather than a confirmed ranking factor, but the direction is consistent with what the 2026 updates rewarded: recognisable, trusted brands.
What to do: build demand for your name, not just your keywords. Earn press coverage, collect genuine reviews, take part in the communities your buyers use, and make sure your business details match everywhere they appear.
5. Can ChatGPT and other AI assistants send traffic to your website?
Yes, and the volume is growing. SE Ranking’s analysis of over 100,000 websites found ChatGPT’s share of referral traffic hit an all-time high in May 2026, after the assistant started showing more prominent, clickable links to brands in its answers.
The share is still small — well under 1% of total visits in that study — but the pattern is revealing. AI-referred visitors land on homepages about four times as often as organic search visitors, which suggests they are discovering brands, not just reading articles.
What to do:
- Create an “AI referrals” channel in your analytics so this traffic is visible.
- Make your homepage explain clearly what you do, who you serve and how to get started.
- Keep key facts — services, locations, pricing ranges — consistent so assistants describe you accurately.
6. How can you track AI search visibility in Google Search Console?
Google has started reporting it. Search Console’s new generative AI performance report shows impressions across AI Overviews, AI Mode and AI features in Discover, broken down by page, country, device and date. According to Neil Patel’s breakdown of the report, it launched in June 2026, starting with UK sites.
The limitation is important: the report shows impressions only — no clicks, CTR, position or queries. Availability has been expanding, but many sites still do not have it.
What to do: check whether the report is live for your property, record a baseline now, and compare which pages AI features surface against the pages that actually generate leads. Pair it with your analytics AI-referral data for a fuller picture.
7. Will AI-generated content be penalised in 2027?
Content is not penalised for being AI-assisted, but low-value content produced at scale is a growing risk. Google ran another spam update in August 2026, and its policies continue to target pages made mainly to manipulate rankings rather than help people.
The real danger is volume without value: hundreds of near-identical location pages, rewritten competitor articles, or posts that answer nothing new. These drag down how search engines judge the whole site.
What to do: audit your content. Merge overlapping pages that compete for the same query, update the pages that still earn traffic, and remove or redirect pages that serve no one. Use AI to research and draft, then have a subject expert add the experience and judgement that make the page worth reading — this is how our content writing team works.
8. Why is local SEO more important with AI search?
Because AI answers for “near me” and service searches rely heavily on business profiles, reviews and consistent local information. When someone asks an assistant for the best agency, clinic or restaurant in their area, the businesses with complete, accurate and well-reviewed profiles are the ones that get named.
Local search keeps getting more detailed too. Google’s September 2026 updates included changes to business profile Q&A and a policy on bilingual business names — relevant for any Bangladeshi business listed in both Bangla and English.
What to do: complete and verify your Google Business Profile, ask every happy customer for a review, and publish genuinely local content. If you are in Dhaka, our Google Business Profile guide for Dhaka businesses walks through the setup step by step.
9. What technical SEO matters most for AI search?
The technical basics matter more, not less: fast pages, clean HTML, clear structure and accurate structured data. AI systems need to fetch, render and understand your pages quickly before they can trust and cite them. A slow, script-heavy or poorly structured site is harder for both search engines and assistants to use.
What to do:
- Pass Core Web Vitals on mobile, especially on key service and product pages.
- Make sure important content is in the HTML, not hidden behind scripts or tabs that fail to render.
- Add accurate schema for your organisation, services, products, articles and FAQs.
- Check your robots.txt so you are not unintentionally blocking crawlers you want to be found by.
- Keep internal linking logical so every important page is reachable within a few clicks.
If your site is built on WordPress or WooCommerce, these fixes are often quicker than they sound — our WordPress development team handles speed, structure and schema as standard.
How should businesses prepare their SEO strategy for 2027?
Prepare by building a site that is the clearest, most trusted answer in your niche — for people and for AI. In practice, that means doing a few things well rather than chasing every new feature.
- Audit what you have. Find technical issues, overlapping pages and content that no longer earns its place.
- Restructure key pages answer-first. Start with your highest-value service and product pages.
- Add proof only you can give. Case studies, real numbers, expert authors and first-hand experience.
- Grow your brand beyond your website. Reviews, PR, partnerships and community activity.
- Measure what matters. Leads and revenue from organic and AI search, plus AI visibility where reporting allows.

Frequently asked questions
Is SEO still worth it in 2027?
Yes. Search engines and AI assistants still need trustworthy sources to answer questions, and they find those sources through SEO signals. What changes is the goal: fewer quick informational clicks, more focus on being cited, trusted and chosen when a buyer is ready to act.
What is the difference between SEO, AEO and GEO?
SEO (search engine optimisation) helps pages rank in search results. AEO (answer engine optimisation) structures content so it can be pulled into direct answers. GEO (generative engine optimisation) aims to get a brand mentioned and cited in AI-generated responses. In practice, they overlap heavily and work best as one strategy.
How do I get my website cited in Google AI Overviews?
There is no guaranteed method, but cited pages usually answer the question directly, come from a trusted source, and are easy to parse. Lead sections with clear answers, back claims with evidence, keep the page technically sound, and build your brand’s authority on the topic over time.
Should small businesses in Bangladesh change their SEO approach?
Mostly they should double down on fundamentals that AI search rewards: a complete Google Business Profile, genuine reviews, fast mobile pages and helpful content in the languages their customers use. Local businesses that do these well are often easier for AI assistants to recommend than larger competitors.
How long does it take to see results from SEO changes?
Technical fixes and on-page improvements often show movement within 6–12 weeks. Gains on competitive commercial terms usually take four to nine months of consistent work. Brand and AI-visibility improvements build gradually, which is why starting early matters.
