Local SEO for Dhaka Businesses: The Complete Google Business Profile Setup Guide
To rank in Google Maps in Dhaka, create a Google Business Profile, verify it by video, and format your address using the House/Road/Block convention with the correct four-digit postcode. Then set an accurate map pin, choose one precise primary category, and earn genuine reviews consistently. Proximity, relevance, and prominence decide the local pack.
Most Dhaka businesses get the first part right and then stop. The profile exists, it’s verified, and nothing happens with it for two years. Meanwhile a competitor two blocks away posts weekly, answers every review, and takes the top three map slots for every search in the area.
This guide covers the full setup, the Dhaka-specific problems that break it, and what to do after verification.
Why local SEO matters more in Dhaka than most cities
Three things make the Dhaka market unusual.
Addresses are unreliable. Google’s building-level map data across most of Dhaka is approximate. Two businesses on the same road can have pins 300 metres apart from where they actually are. If your pin is wrong, you lose proximity-based rankings for the customers standing closest to you.
Navigation is landmark-based. Nobody in Dhaka finds a shop by house number. They find it by “opposite Rupnagar Model School” or “beside the Banani 11 pharmacy”. Your profile needs to reflect how people actually navigate.
Facebook dominates. For a large share of Bangladeshi businesses, the Facebook Page is the de facto website. That’s fine — but it means your NAP details exist in at least two places and they’re usually inconsistent. Inconsistent NAP is one of the most common reasons a Dhaka listing underperforms.
The upside is that competition on Google Maps here is genuinely weak. In most Dhaka neighbourhoods, a properly optimised profile can reach the local pack in weeks, not months, because the competing listings are half-finished.
Step 1: Create the profile
Go to google.com/business and sign in with a Google account you control long-term. Not a staff member’s personal Gmail — use a company account, because losing access to a verified profile is a painful recovery process.
Search for your business name first. Many Dhaka businesses already have an auto-generated listing created from Google Maps user submissions or scraped data. If yours exists, claim it rather than creating a duplicate. Duplicate listings compete against each other and both lose.
Business name: use the name on your signage. Exactly that, nothing more. “Karim Electronics” — not “Karim Electronics | Best Electronics Shop in Mirpur Dhaka”. Keyword stuffing the name is a guideline violation, it gets reported by competitors, and suspension takes weeks to appeal.
If your signage is in Bangla, use the Bangla name as the primary and add the English transliteration in the profile’s alternate name field where available.
Step 2: Format your address correctly
This is where most Dhaka listings go wrong. Use this structure:
Address line 1: House 8/18, Road 5, Block C
Address line 2: Rupnagar, Mirpur
City: Dhaka
Postal code: 1216
Country: Bangladesh
A few rules:
- Get the postcode right. Mirpur is 1216, Gulshan 1212, Banani 1213, Dhanmondi 1209, Uttara 1230, Motijheel 1000, Mohammadpur 1207. A wrong postcode confuses the geocoder and can throw your pin into the wrong thana entirely.
- Don’t put landmarks in the address field. “Opposite Shaheed Suhrawardy Hospital” belongs in your business description, not the street address. Landmarks in the address field break geocoding.
- Don’t include floor numbers in line 1 unless the building genuinely requires it. Put “4th Floor” in line 2 if you need it.
- Match your Facebook Page exactly. Character for character, including whether you write “Road 5” or “Road No. 5”. Then match it on your website footer, on Bikroy, on any directory you’re listed in.
Set the pin manually
After saving the address, open the map and drag the pin to your actual building. Do not trust the automatic placement. Verify against satellite view — Dhaka’s satellite imagery is good even where the street data isn’t.
If your pin is on the wrong side of a road or in the wrong building, fix it now. Moving a pin significantly after verification can trigger a re-verification request.
Step 3: Pass video verification
This changed in July 2026. Google retired postcard verification and made video the default method for most new profiles. For Bangladesh this is arguably an improvement — postcard delivery to Dhaka addresses was slow and frequently failed — but the video requirements are strict.
Google reviews your submission and responds within roughly five working days.
What the video has to prove
Three things, in one continuous unedited recording:
- You’re at the address on the profile. Start outside. Film street signs, the building number, neighbouring shops, and any recognisable landmark.
- A real business operates there. Film your signage, then walk inside and show the working space — desks, stock, equipment, customers’ waiting area.
- You manage it. Show something only staff could access. Unlocking an office door, operating the POS terminal, opening the cash drawer, logging into a work computer.
Recording rules
- One take. No cuts, no edits, no stitching clips together. An edited video fails automatically.
- 60 to 120 seconds is the sweet spot. Minimum 30 seconds. Google permits longer but shorter uploads fail less often — a real consideration on Bangladeshi mobile data.
- No people and no voices. Don’t narrate. Record during quiet hours. Background conversation is a common failure cause.
- Record on a phone, in daylight, holding it steadily. Drop the camera resolution to 1080p or lower to keep the file size manageable.
The Dhaka signage problem
This is the part that fails most often here. If your office is on the fourth floor of a mixed-use building in Dhanmondi with nothing but a small nameplate beside the lift, you will struggle to prove storefront status.
Two options:
Get proper signage first. A building directory entry listing your business name, or a plate on your door. Film the directory board in the lobby, then the lift, then your floor, then your door plate, then inside. That chain of continuity is what reviewers want to see.
Or register as a service-area business. Google’s own guidance is explicit: if you don’t have permanent on-site signage, list as a service-area business rather than a storefront. Your address is then hidden and you define the areas you serve instead. For agencies, consultants, contractors, and delivery-based businesses across Dhaka, this is usually the honest and correct classification.
Don’t claim storefront status you can’t film. A failed attempt costs you a week; repeated failures can lead to suspension.
While you wait
Don’t edit the profile during review. Changes can reset the process. If it fails, Google often won’t tell you why — check for a name or address mismatch, unclear signage, audio, or edits, fix the cause, and rerecord. Submitting the same video again achieves nothing.
Step 4: Complete the profile properly
A verified but empty profile ranks poorly. Google’s own data consistently shows complete profiles outperform incomplete ones, and completeness is something you fully control.
Categories
Pick one primary category that describes what you are, not what you sell. A restaurant that also does catering picks “Restaurant” as primary and adds “Caterer” as secondary. The primary category carries far more ranking weight than secondaries.
Check what your top-ranking competitors use. If three of them use a category you didn’t consider, that’s a signal.
Bangladesh-specific categories are limited. If nothing fits precisely, choose the closest broader option rather than something inaccurate.
Hours
Set the Bangladesh working week correctly. Most businesses here run Sunday to Thursday with Friday and Saturday as the weekend — Google defaults to a Monday-to-Friday assumption, so check every day.
Use special hours for:
- Eid-ul-Fitr and Eid-ul-Adha closures
- Ramadan hours if you shorten them
- Pohela Boishakh, Victory Day, Independence Day
- Any hartal or general strike closure
Wrong hours generate one-star reviews from people who turned up to a closed shop. That’s an entirely avoidable cost.
Phone number
Use a local number in international format: +880 1XXX-XXXXXX. It must actually be answered — Google validates numbers, and a dead number can trigger re-verification.
Use the same number on your Facebook Page and website. If you run call tracking, put the tracking number nowhere near your GBP.
Description
750 characters. Front-load what you do and where. This is where landmarks belong.

Our office is in Rupnagar, near Rupnagar Residential Area. We provide SEO, social media marketing, content writing, WordPress development, and ecommerce development for startups, SaaS companies, and established businesses.
No promotional language, no pricing, no URLs — those get the description rejected.
Attributes
Fill in everything applicable. Wheelchair accessible, has parking, women-led, accepts cards. Add bKash, Nagad, and Rocket where the payment attributes allow it — these are genuine filter criteria for Bangladeshi customers and almost nobody sets them.
Photos
- Logo and cover photo, both correctly sized
- Exterior shots from the street, from the direction people approach
- Interior shots showing the space realistically
- Team photos — real ones, not stock
- Product or work samples
Aim for 15–20 to start, and add a few every month. Profiles with recent photos get more engagement, and engagement feeds prominence.
Geotagging your photos does nothing. That myth persists in Bangladeshi SEO forums; ignore it.
Step 5: Reviews
Reviews are the single strongest prominence signal you control, and the hardest to build in Bangladesh because the review habit is weak. Customers who are delighted with your service will happily tell you so on WhatsApp and never think to open Google Maps.
Ask directly and make it one tap. Get your review link from the profile dashboard, shorten it, and send it by WhatsApp within a day of completing the work. “Would you mind leaving a quick review? Takes 30 seconds” converts far better than a printed card nobody uses.
Ask at the right moment — right after a successful delivery, not in a monthly newsletter.
Reply to every review, positive and negative. Reply in the language the review was written in. Mixed Bangla and English replies are fine and read as authentic.
Never buy reviews. The Bangladeshi market for fake reviews is active and cheap. Google’s detection has improved substantially, penalties are applied to the profile rather than the reviews, and recovery is slow. A competitor reporting you is also trivially easy.
Respond calmly to negative reviews. A measured, specific reply to a complaint often reads better to prospects than the five-star reviews above it.
Step 6: Post regularly
Google Posts appear on your profile and expire after seven days unless they’re event or offer posts. Weekly is enough.
Useful post types for Dhaka businesses: Eid or Pohela Boishakh offers, new product or service announcements, a photo from a recent job, an FAQ answer, a holiday hours notice.
Post in whichever language your customers use. Bangla posts perform well for local retail; English suits B2B and export-facing services.
Step 7: Build local citations
Consistent NAP across Bangladeshi directories reinforces your legitimacy. Priority list:
- Facebook Page (highest priority — usually already exists, usually inconsistent)
- Bikroy
- Sheba.xyz
- Bangladesh Yellow Pages
- Foodpanda and Daraz, if relevant to your category
- Your local chamber of commerce or trade association
- Any Bangladeshi industry directory in your sector
Match name, address, and phone exactly across all of them. This is tedious and it works.
What actually drives local pack rankings
Google weighs three factors:
Proximity — how close the searcher is. You can’t change this, but an accurate pin means you benefit from it properly.
Relevance — how well your profile matches the query. Category, description, services, and reviews mentioning what you do all feed this.
Prominence — how well known you are. Reviews, citations, backlinks to your website, and engagement with the profile.
Prominence is where the work is, and where almost every Dhaka competitor is doing nothing.
Common mistakes
- Keyword-stuffed business names — a suspension risk, and competitors report them
- Duplicate listings from an unclaimed auto-generated profile
- Storefront classification without filmable signage
- A pin left where Google placed it automatically
- Facebook and Google addresses that don’t match
- Claiming a virtual office or a coworking desk as a storefront
- Abandoning the profile after verification
- Buying reviews
- Ignoring negative reviews
A realistic 90-day plan
Weeks 1–2: Claim or create, format the address, fix the pin, pass video verification.
Weeks 3–4: Complete every field. Categories, hours, attributes, description, 15+ photos. Fix Facebook and website NAP to match.
Weeks 5–8: Request reviews from your last 20 customers. Post weekly. Build the priority citations.
Weeks 9–12: Keep the review requests running as routine. Add photos monthly. Check Performance in the dashboard for which searches find you, and adjust your description and services to match.
Most Dhaka businesses that follow this see measurable movement in the local pack within eight to twelve weeks.
Frequently asked questions
Is Google Business Profile free in Bangladesh? Yes. Creating, verifying, and managing a profile costs nothing. Anyone charging you a fee for the listing itself is charging for their time, not for Google access.
Can I verify a Google Business Profile without a physical shop in Dhaka? Yes — register as a service-area business. Your address stays hidden and you define your service areas. This is the correct classification for consultants, contractors, and delivery businesses.
How long does video verification take in Bangladesh? Up to five working days after upload. If it fails, fix the specific cause and record a new video rather than resubmitting the same one.
Should my business name be in Bangla or English? Use whatever appears on your physical signage. Verification reviewers compare the profile name against what they see in your video, so a mismatch causes failures.
Why isn’t my business showing on Google Maps in Dhaka? Most often: not verified, suspended for a guideline violation, a duplicate listing splitting your signals, or a pin placed in the wrong location.
Can I have two profiles for two Dhaka branches? Yes, one profile per physical location with its own address, phone, and hours. Never create two profiles for one location.
